Located in the central stairwell of the Marcus Whitman Elementary School, Vista is an installation that is meant to encourage and support the student body to discover, explore, and cherish the unique landscape of the Columbia River Basin. Constructed from thousands of cut colored pencils glued into birch and maple geometrical frames and coated with UV protected acrylic resin. The artwork is inspired by the rivers, shrub steppe, hills, and mountains of the region that are just outside of the school’s doors. Wherever these students go in their futures, it is our hope that Vista can serve as a reminder of where they came from.

Commissioned by Washington State Arts Commission, for Whitman Elementary in Richland, Vista features thousands of color pencils spanning one central stairwell. Pencils are cut and glued into birch and maple geometric frames. Hundreds of kindergartners through fifth-graders poured their stories into this sculpture. Inspired by their own impressions of rivers, shrub-steppe, mountains, and hills, children learn to cherish the Columbia River Basin lifelong.
