“This is a Plumb-Bob” is an installation in Portland State University’s Shattuck Hall commissioned by the Oregon Arts Commission, which houses the architecture department. As an instrument used to determine true verticality, the piece is a symbolic reminder for students of the importance of orientation and perspective.

Commissioned by Oregon Arts Commission, for Portland State’s architecture department, This Is a Plumb Bob marks my first public art installation. This sculpture features a pointed weight tied to string, like every plumb bob used to establish verticality. While the instrument dates back to Ancient Egypt, its modern use is in surveying and construction. At this early point in my career, I remind students of the importance of orientation and perspective.
